President Bush at last night’s Broadcasters’ Dinner

Posted by henryhutton on March 30, 2007

You’ve got to hand it to our man Mr. Bush. Even in the worst of times he’s able to joke around–although that behavior is expected from our presidents at the annual Broadcasters’ Dinner (and yes, even in the worst of times).

Like his response to:

Tell us, Mr. President, how have things changed since the last Broadcasters’ Dinner?

“A year ago my approval rating was in the 30s, my nominee for the Supreme Court had just withdrawn, and my vice president had shot someone,” President Bush said Wednesday night during the annual gathering.

“Ah,” he said, “those were the good ol’ days.”

Or, on a more timely note regarding the controvery over the Justice Department’s firing of eight federal prosecutors, Bush said: “I have to admit we really blew the way we let those attorneys go. You know you’ve lost it when people sympathize with lawyers.”

Obviously he’s not writing this stuff, but he’s delivering it well. And, in a time where he’s not impressing most of the country with his leadership, he is impressing me, at least, with his humor.
